Heart & Blood Vessel Disease Research

Meet the Director

I am honored to lead the Heart and Blood Vessel Disease Research Focus Area at NEOMED. The faculty in our research area currently are principal investigators on 11 grants from the National Institutes of Health and generate about $2,750,000 in annual support. Our members serve on the editorial boards of some of the highest impact journal in cardiovascular science including Circulation Research, Basic Research in Cardiology, International Journal of Cardiology and Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology and perform as grant reviewers for the National Institutes of Health, American Heart Association, and international agencies such as the Swiss National Science Foundation.

I am proud of the environment we have created to foster the growth and development of young scientists. The future of the research focus area is critically dependent on the cultivation of new, young faculty to attain independent careers in academics. Equally important is that faculty catalyze the interest and attention of young scientists and trainees. We cultivate the development of trainees through extensive mentoring, and weekly activities of the faculty of the focus area. We also encourage students to meet with our guests from other Universities who visit NEOMED and deliver seminars to discuss their recent work.

The faculty within the research focus area have provided a platform for mentoring and development of young scientists, and our former students and trainees have positions at institutions including Florida State University, Medical College of Georgia of Augusta University, Medical College of Wisconsin, Vanderbilt, National Institutes of Environmental and Health Sciences, City of Hope Medical Center, Texas A&M University Health Sciences Center, and New York Medical College. We believe this track record in training is due to our successes with funding and our approach towards solving fundamental problems in cardiovascular sciences. I, as the director, encourage any interested students and fellows to contact me for more information.
