We spoke with Sarrah Hein, PharmD, BCPPS, who is a preceptor at Akron Children’s Hospital – Mahoning Valley.

Why did you choose pharmacy?

I worked in a small pharmacy in high school where I saw the impact a pharmacist could make in a patient’s life firsthand. I remember being called by a friend’s parent who knew I worked at the pharmacy. My friend’s life saving medication was in the pharmacy and they did not make it to the pharmacy in time to pick up the medication before the pharmacy closed. I was able to contact the pharmacist on call and they were able to get the medication for my friend. The look of relief on their parents face made me feel like I could make a difference in a patient’s life.

what advice and tips do you have for new students or young professionals about starting careers?

Put in effort early and you will reap the benefits later in your career. Explore all avenues of pharmacy before starting to narrow your education. It is ok if you do not know exactly what type of pharmacist you want to be when entering your fourth year rotations.  Keep an open mind.

what is your philosophy on the practice of pharmacy?

Continue to work hard and show your medical team the impact a pharmacist can make on the patient. Never stop learning!
