Poetry and Broken-Heart Syndrome

Feb. 15, 2022

Valentine’s Day may have turned thoughts to poetry, but ideas from interventional cardiologist Ankur Kalra, M.D., offer a new perspective.

Dr. Kalra, an adjunct associate professor in the Department of Internal Medicine, studies broken-heart syndrome – otherwise known as stress cardiomyopathy. It’s a condition that has become more common during the COVID-19 pandemic.

A team of more than 20 College of Medicine students led by Nupur Goel, a third-year medicine student, organized the first TEDxNEOMED event, The Call to Heal: Healing Ourselves, Our Neighbors and Our World,” held Oct. 23, 2021.  At the inaugural TEDxNEOMED event, Dr. Kalra spoke about the healing role that poetry can play.
