Giving Health Care Professionals Tools for Resilience

Burnout is real for health care workers – and that’s why funding through the federal American Rescue Plan is being used to promote mental health in the workplace.

In a Crain’s Cleveland Business article titled “Medical Schools Battle Burnout Through Wellness Education,” Randon Welton, M.D., Margaret Clark Morgan Endowed Chair of Psychiatry, speaks about how NEOMED will spend the $2 million it was granted over three years.

The University is one of two institutions in Ohio to receive a total of $4.2 million to improve health care retention, according to the Crain’s article, which noted, “Taking into special consideration the needs of rural and medically underserved communities, the program will assist health care organizations in efforts around wellness and resiliency.”

Taking a humanistic approach to practicing medicine

“A program called ‘Healer’s Art,’ for example, teaches students how to find meaning in their work, creating a humanistic approach centered on introspection rather than simply diagnosing and prescribing. ‘The value of what you do can be through poetry, journaling and storytelling,’ Welton said. ‘It’s about finding the barriers to joy in your work and reflecting on what you can do about it.’”
