NEOMED Foundation Launches New Fundraising Initiative to Aid Students and Community During COVID-19 Crisis
At times, situations emerge which require shifts in priorities and increased support. The COVID-19 crisis is one of those times.
In an unprecedented step, the NEOMED Foundation has committed to raising at least $100,000 to address four specific and immediate needs related to the COVID-19 crisis:
- A meal program for local families who are in need
- Expanded mental health service for NEOMED students
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and other supplies for students and area health agencies
- Additional funds to address student financial emergencies
The Foundation’s Blue Fund, which serves as the University’s annual fund, increased its goals by $100,000 to ensure that the additional funds raised would be allocated solely to the Foundation’s COVID-19 response.
“This initiative allows NEOMED to further serve those in the community who have been impacted by the COVID-19 crisis,” said Bruce Sherman, chair of the NEOMED Foundation. “Furthermore, we can provide additional support to the students who need it most at this time. Educating physicians, pharmacists, researchers and public health professionals is vital for the future health of our communities.”
The Blue Fund addresses the University’s most urgent needs, such as student scholarships, academic programs and student activities like the SOAR Student-Run Free Clinic, which provided primary care services at no cost to local residents who are uninsured or underinsured.
“I am proud of NEOMED’s response, but also know that new needs and funding challenges have emerged from this crisis,” said John T. Langell, M.D., Ph.D., M.P.H., M.B.A. “Now, more than ever, we need the support of the community.”
