Office of Geriatrics

Education & Research

NEOMED offers a geriatric curriculum that is integrated throughout the four years of medical education to assure that all students acquire a foundation in geriatric medicine. The curricula  includes knowledge of the aging process and longevity; the importance of maintaining autonomy and dignity of older adults; psychosocial aspects of aging; health and wellness;  syndromes of special concern to geriatric medicine; health economics; advance care planning; family caregiving and end-of-life care. Learning opportunities incorporate the full spectrum of environments where geriatric care is provided: ambulatory settings, hospital, home, long term care and community settings. Special emphasis is placed on interdisciplinary approaches to physical and mental health care, holistic assessment and transitions of care.

Through compassionate care, faculty role models emphasize excellence in geriatric philosophies and approaches in their practice of primary care and/or areas of specialty.

Elective Opportunities

Additional learning opportunities are offered to develop higher level expertise in geriatrics through elective and selective courses, summer fellowship experiences, participation in the geriatric student interest group and community service activities.

Aging-related research opportunities are available for students at NEOMED and partner institutions.
