School Mask Mandates Differ Throughout the U.S.

Aug. 10, 2020

Backpack? Check. Lunch bag? Check. And don’t forget a face covering!

Many school districts across the United States are working to determine what the 2020-2021 academic year will look like amidst the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

While Jefferson (Georgia) City Schools recently reopened without a face-covering mandate, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine announced a new health order that will require K-12 children to wear face coverings while at school.

Richard Watkins, M.D., a Northeast Ohio Medical University associate professor of internal medicine who specializes in infectious disease, tells Yahoo Life  that anyone who enters a school building should wear a mask — even if it’s not officially required.

Dr. Watkins says, “Masks are crucial to reduce the spread of COVID-19. If parents decide to send their kids to these schools, then they should definitely have them wear one.”
