NEOMED Professor Helps Diagnose News Anchor’s COVID-Related Heart Issues

The Practical Cardiology elective that J. Ronald Mikolich, M.D., teaches fourth-year College of Medicine students may have just gained a heartwarming new example for future courses by the Northeast Ohio Medical University professor of internal medicine.

When a young local news anchor began to experience heart complications after contracting COVID-19, Dr. Mikolich came to the rescue. Dr. Mikolich, an interventional cardiologist at Sharon Regional Medical Center in Sharon, Pa., discovered swelling and inflammation around WFMJ news weekend anchor and reporter Caroline Collins’ heart following a cardiac MRI.

If untreated, the swelling and inflammation can lead to additional complications, such as atrial fibrillation and myocarditis. Thanks to Dr. Mikolich and his team at Sharon Regional Medical Center, Collins is expected to make a full recovery.
