NEOMED Offers Weeklong Overnight Program for High School Students Interested in Pharmacy

Northeast Ohio Medical University’s College of Pharmacy will be hosting its annual Pathways to Pharmacy program for high school students interested in a career in health care. From June 21 to June 26, 2020, the weeklong, overnight camp will provide students with opportunities to learn about the profession of pharmacy along with other health care topics. Students will be staying overnight at Kent State University and shuttled to and from the NEOMED campus for the program.

Pathways to Pharmacy students spend the day learning about pharmacy compounding, patient counseling, over-the-counter products, vital signs, roles of the pharmacist and careers in pharmacy. Evenings will be filled with social activities, as students will have access to an escape room, a trampoline park, bubble soccer and kayaking.

Fady Abdlrasul, Pharm.D., runs the program with the hope that he can shape students’ perspectives on the pharmacy profession, which has undergone substantial changes in recent years.

“Pharmacists were once known for just dispensing medications,” said Dr. Abdlrasul. “The program is a way to educate future pharmacists about the work that modern pharmacists do, like being able to immunize patients, complete comprehensive medication reviews, work alongside medical teams in the hospital setting, perform disease state management services in outpatient settings, and even prescribe medications.”
