NEOMED appoints Julie Aultman to College of Graduate Studies dean

Northeast Ohio Medical University announced the appointment of Julie M. Aultman, Ph.D., as dean of its College of Graduate Studies, effective March 1, 2023.

Dr. Aultman will lead the University’s growing graduate studies program, which currently offers 12 graduate degrees. Recognized recently by the Arthur P. Gold Foundation with an honorable mention for the 2022 Pearl Birnbaum Hurwitz Humanism in Medicine Award, Dr. Aultman is a clinical ethicist and director of Medical Ethics and Humanities at the College of Graduate Studies. She previously held the role of vice dean and was interim dean before being appointed as dean.

Expansion of health professions workforce

Strategizing with University leadership — including deans at the Colleges of Medicine, Pharmacy and Dentistry — and collaborating with members of the University’s network of nationally ranked health care systems, Dr. Aultman aims to facilitate the expansion of the health professions workforce, particularly in areas where there are shortages.

“I am fortunate to be working with the most amazing team of students, faculty and staff, who are dedicated, motivated and passionate about growing our educational, scholarly and innovative programming in the College of Graduate Studies,” Dr. Aultman said. “I greatly appreciate this opportunity to help lead this shared vision for the College and to engage with our clinical and community partners in the effort to develop collaborative educational opportunities and improve the health and well-being of our community.”

Dr. Aultman is also a professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine. She previously served as chair of the Institutional Review Board, which oversees translational research at NEOMED.

The need for change

“With shortages in primary care, concerns around the quadruple aim and the impact of social determinants of health, the need for change in medical education and practice is now,” said John T. Langell, M.D., Ph.D., M.P.H., M.B.A., president of NEOMED. “Dr. Aultman’s experience and research interests, ranging from refugee ethics to physician-patient relationships, help inform innovative approaches to programs in allied health, leadership and global health. With her leadership at the College of Graduate Studies, we will accelerate positive change in health care.”

Dr. Aultman earned her master’s degree in bioethics from Case Western Reserve University and Ph.D. in philosophy with a concentration in medical ethics and cognitive science from Michigan State University.
