COVID-19 Reinfection Possible but Very Rare, Say Experts

The case of a Nevada man who contracted COVID-19 twice has attracted public attention and study by researchers, with findings recently published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases, a British medical journal.

Prevention interviewed experts including Richard Watkins, M.D., an infectious disease physician and professor of internal medicine, for their insights into how the public should interpret the case and what it might mean about possible reinfection.

Quoting Dr. Watkins, Prevention wrote, “While this does seem to be rare at this point, it’s likely more cases of re-infection will surface in the future, ‘given that we don’t see any signs that the pandemic is getting any better.’”
