The Colors of Medicine

If you’ve visited the NEOMED Education and Wellness (NEW) Center’s second floor lately, the bright colors of a new piece of art may have caught your attention.

Northeast Ohio Medical University’s Artists in Medicine student organization partnered with NEOMED’s student chapter of Physicians for Social Responsibility to collect and design recycled bottle caps onto a mural titled “Healing Hands,” which features two intertwined hands and a stethoscope.

“This project symbolizes the spirit of service and selflessness that motivates us. As health care professionals, we aspire to put our patients’ and communities’ needs above all and to lend a helping hand to those in need,” says Sohi Mistry, a second-year College of Medicine student and contributing artist. Mistry took a leading role in bringing “Healing Hands” to fruition in time for it to be displayed at White Coat ceremonies.

College of Medicine students Koshala Selvakumar, Alisha Gupta, Maahi Mistry, Reha Rabbani, Shreya Gurumurthy, Samuel Doerle and Matthew DeSanto all helped to create the mural. Members of the NEOMED community got involved, too, by contributing bottle caps to collection boxes that were placed around campus over the past few months.

“The creative use of upcycled materials symbolizes the overarching need to be aware of our environment and the countless ways it impacts our lives and our responsibility to protect it,” says Mistry.
