Nicotine: Is It Good or Bad for People with Schizophrenia?

In this lecture, Dr. Dugan discusses the impact of nicotine on schizophrenia. By the end of this lecture, you will be able to: 1) describe the actions of nicotine on neurotransmitters, 2) list potential reasons for high use of nicotine products, specifically cigarettes in patients with schizophrenia, and 3) identify evidence of nicotine’s actions in patients with schizophrenia.

MAO Inhibitors. How Do These Antidepressants Work and How to Use Them Safely

In this lecture, Dr. Dugan explains how the MAO inhibitors work and the mechanisms behind the potential risks. She also discusses the therapeutic benefits of these medications and how to use them safely. By the end of this lecture, you will be able to: 1) describe the mechanism of action of the monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), 2) identify relevant interactions of MAOIs with medications and foods, and 3) evaluate efficacy data of MAOIs in treatment of depression.

In this lecture, Dr. Dugan examines features of lithium’s multiple mechanisms of action that might promote neuroprotection. Pharmacodynamics: How do antipsychotic medications work?

In this lecture, Dr. Dugan reviews the mechanisms of action of the medications used to treat psychosis. By the end of this lecture, you will be able to: 1) identify common pharmacologic targets of first and second generation antipsychotic medications, 2) describe proposed therapeutic actions of first and second generation antipsychotic medications, and 3) compare adverse effect profiles of the first and second generation antipsychotic medications.
