Sports Medicine Physician Comments on Love

In 30 years of assessing athletes, physician Joseph Congeni, M.D., has developed his radar for when things ‘’just don’t add up.”

One aspect hidden from the picture may be that a person may be quietly dealing with mental health issues, Dr. Congeni said recently on Akron radio station WAKR, where the NEOMED graduate (Class of ’84) and director of sports medicine at Akron Children’s Hospital has a regular show.

When a high-profile athlete like Kevin Love opens up about his struggle with mental health, it’s ‘’a huge revelation’’ for others, says Dr. Congeni, who hopes that Love’s comments will help mental health issues to be taken more seriously.

NEOMED’s Department of Psychiatry trains undergraduate medical students; offers a general psychiatry residency program; and has an affiliation with a child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship based at Akron Children’s Hospital. The department also serves as an incubator for bringing evidence-based and promising practices to hospitals, clinics and community organizations.
