Renowned immunologist donates textbook to students

Joseph A. Bellanti, M.D., wrote the book on immunology. Literally.

The textbook, Immunology IV: Clinical Applications in Health and Disease, is widely used in medical schools across the country. That group of schools now includes NEOMED.

Dr. Bellanti visited NEOMED in March to distribute copies of the textbook that he donated through the NEOMED Foundation. President John Langell and foundation staff handed out the books to students on their way to class.

Dr. Bellanti is professor emeritus of pediatrics and immunology and founding director of the International Center for Interdisciplinary Studies of Immunology at Georgetown University Medical Center. He has published more than 500 scientific articles and numerous textbooks that describe his antimicrobial research, evaluation of new vaccine strategies and developmental immunology.

In reference to Immunology IV, one reviewer noted, “Medical students and undergraduates who have not previously studied immunology will find the book daunting and intimidating because of its detailed presentation of the complexities of the immune system, but they will appreciate the carefully constructed learning objectives, clinical case material, illustrations, chapter summaries, and questions.”
