College of Pharmacy students at expo

Pharmacy Students Present at CSU Middle School Health Professions Expo

A group of eight first-year College of Pharmacy students from Northeast Ohio Medical University recently participated as exhibitors for the Middle School Health Professions Expo, held at Cleveland State University’s Center for Innovations in Medical Professions building.

The event provided nearly 150 middle school students from the Cleveland area an opportunity to learn about different professions in the health care field through educational presentations and hands-on activities. The goal of the expo is to expose middle school students — many who come from underserved communities — to the different health care professions, in hopes of sparking their interest in pursuing a career in healthcare.

Virginia San Juan, Alexandria Gotschall, Taylor Elias, Uyen Nguyen, John Ogwuegbu, Ashley Naccarato, Bryony Maurer and Victoria Parry spent the afternoon showing the middle school students their favorite parts of pharmacy.

“Our NEOMED students definitely sparked the interest of attendees with our creative approach in presenting “The Roles of a Pharmacist,” especially with our slime-making station, shares San Juan.

The students’ pharmacy exhibit included five different stations: the roles of a pharmacist, dispensing and packing pills (beads), medication safety, deciphering prescriptions written in shorthand and the slime-making station, which simulated compounding.

The expo included other exhibits, such as dentistry, physical therapy, speech and hearing, and social work.
