Northeast Ohio Medical University Launches NEOvations Bench to Bedside Program

Interdisciplinary student-led program to meet needs of patients through medical technology design

NEOMED has announced the creation of its NEOvations Bench to Bedside program, which brings students, medical professionals, industry experts, investors and other stakeholders together to design innovative medical technology to meet specific needs of patients for improved health care outcomes with lower costs.

Students from NEOMED and other local institutes of higher education will form interdisciplinary teams representing the fields of health, business, engineering and law to complete the bench to bedside process. The process begins with an observation of a clinical problem and identifying a specific need. From there, ideation follows with design of a medical technology while patent and regulatory requirements are also being considered. The final step is to create a prototype and develop a commercialization strategy. Throughout the process, students will receive support from medical, industry and academic professionals. Students will maintain ownership of their technology while gaining experience in accelerating new technologies from concept to commercialization.

The program will conclude in April 2021 with teams presenting their medical technologies to a panel of judges for a chance to advance their work for further development. Judges will be comprised of health and industry professionals, investors and university leadership.

“The NEOvations Bench to Bedside program provides an outstanding platform to engage students into interdisciplinary teams and unleash the creativity of their diverse experiences and knowledge to solve some of the world’s biggest health care problems,” said John T. Langell, M.D., Ph.D., M.P.H., M.B.A., president of NEOMED.

Dr. Langell, an entrepreneur in his own right with several patents, also launched a successful bench to bedside program in his previous role at the University of Utah. “This is a truly inclusive program that brings together universities, health systems and private industry to grow an ecosystem of disruptive innovation. Northeast Ohio is already a leader in health care delivery, this program will allow us to grow that strength by also focusing on the development of new health care solutions.”

The program is open to students who are enrolled in an institute of higher education, especially those studying engineering, business or law. There is no cost to participate. To learn more, visit neomed.edu/benchtobedside.
