NEOMED Retiree Elected Fellow by the Microscopy Society of America

Jeanette Killius, a former instructor of Microscopic Anatomy and supervisor of Electron Microscopy, was recently elected a Fellow in the Microscopy Society of America (MSA), for “her selfless dedication to the field of microscopy in research, applications, and educational outreach, and for her personification of excellence and professionalism.” Killius, who retired from NEOMED in 2016 after 37 years of service, was nominated by her peers. In August, MSA President Ian Anderson presented Killius with a commemorative plaque during the annual Microscopy and Microanalysis conference being held in St. Louis, Missouri. The honor of Fellow is bestowed upon only a small, selective group each year.

The Microscopy Society of America is dedicated to the promotion, techniques and applications of microscopy and microanalysis in all relevant scientific disciplines. The Society hosts annual meetings throughout the United States.  As an active member for more than 35 years, Killius has served MSA in many capacities including chair of the Tech Forum, Nominations Committee, Fellowship Committee, Bylaws Committee and Membership Committee. Killius served as the organization’s secretary from 2006 to 2011 and president in 2014, representing the Society at several national and international meetings.

Killius attributes her ongoing participation in the organization and drive to further her education in electron microscopy to her former NEOMED supervisor, James Gilliam, Ph.D. (assistant professor and Director of Electron Microscopy) and Annabel Liebelt, Ph.D., former professor of anatomy and chair of Microscopic Anatomy. Although retired, Killius still remains active in the electron microscopy field.
