NEOMED students, faculty and organizations were recognized during the annual Campus Leadership Awards Night on Friday, April 21.
The awards, sponsored by the Office of Student Services, honor the diverse collection of individuals and groups across campus who engage in leadership learning.
“What we are doing today is recognizing honorees who are a sterling reflection of what leadership can achieve when you lead with purpose, passion and integrity. To our honorees today, our heartfelt congratulations for your recognition and thank you for all you’ve done for your peers, colleagues, the community and the university,” said President Langell.
The awards and their recipients are:
Medicine Peer Mentor of the Year, recognizes one outstanding medicine peer tutor for their dedication to assisting other students with academic needs: Prachi Lee
Pharmacy Peer Mentor of the Year, recognizes one outstanding pharmacy peer tutor for their dedication to assisting other students with academic needs: Paige Tulcewicz
COGS Dean’s Leadership Award, given to a student who excels academically and exemplifies the values of leadership, curiosity, compassion, inclusivity and humility: Cayman Pearsall
Ethical Leader Award, sponsored by the Student Conduct Council and given to a student for continued contributions to modeling ethical leadership: Maya Schnall
Outstanding Advisor Award, given to a faculty, staff or staff advisor who has lent their leadership and expertise to promote the objective of a registered student organization, council or committee: Fady Abdlrasul, Pharm.D.
Diversity Student Organization of the Year Award, to recognize one student organization that demonstrates a commitment to issues of diversity, equity and inclusion: Student National Medical Association
New Student Organization of the Year, recognizes one student organization that excels in their contributions to the University, student unity, education and program offerings and demonstration of leadership qualities in its full first year of activity: Global Health Interest Group
Student Organization of the Year, recognizes one student organization for their continued contribution to the University, service to the community, educational program offerings and demonstration of effective leadership qualities: Students for a National Health Program
Community Impact Award, recognizes one student organization that has given their time, support and monetary donations to better the community: Latino Medical Student Association
Outstanding Student Leader Award, given to the student who shows esteemed academic work, involvement in extracurricular activities and a broad sense of awareness and leadership on campus: Sanjay Jinka
Tori Carpenter, coordinator in the Office of Student Services, shared the following statistics for the 2022-2023 academic year:
- 91 active student organizations
- 800+ in-person and virtual events
- 47 community projects completed
- 860 community service hours reported
Dyann Whaley, associate director of the Learning Center, also shared highlights from the past year. She said 70 medicine students and 41 pharmacy students provided peer tutoring to 529 of their peers. Those tutors provided tutor support for 19 medicine courses and 21 pharmacy courses, for a total of 3,711 tutoring hours. And this academic year, they provided 1,000 additional hours compared to the previous year.
