NEOMED Professor Talks Social Distancing with Akron Beacon Journal

As most of America patiently waits at home under state orders, it leaves many wondering — when will we no longer have to abide by social distancing measures?

As noted in recent Akron Beacon Journal article, experts at some universities believe “only elderly and vulnerable people” should be required to continue social distancing. Not everyone agrees on that point, but many concur that more testing is needed.

Angelo DeLucia, Ph.D., an associate professor of molecular virology and cancer biology at Northeast Ohio Medical University, told the Akron Beacon Journal, “This is a great point of contention at the moment. I’m basically waiting to hear what our experts who have been studying this for a long time have to say.

“Right now, they’ve come down on mitigating this virus into extinction rather than [relaxing social distancing restrictions] county by county. Although clearly more testing could change our thoughts about this.”
