NEOMED appoints Tonya Strong-Charles as chief marketing officer

Northeast Ohio Medical University has appointed Tonya Strong-Charles as chief marketing officer, effective May 13, 2024. Strong-Charles will be responsible for all internal and external communications, effectively highlighting NEOMED’s dynamic programs, engaged faculty and outstanding students.

An accomplished marketing and communications leader, Strong-Charles has significant expertise in public relations, crisis communications and improving brand strength. She has successfully developed results-driven media outcomes centered on thought leadership, raising regional and global awareness of the institutions she has represented. Her career includes successful roles as a higher education communications strategist for both Syracuse University and John Carroll University. 

“We are excited to have Tonya join the NEOMED team,” said University President John T. Langell, M.D., Ph.D., M.P.H., M.B.A. “She brings a strong track record and a wealth of experience that will help NEOMED share its story beyond Northeast Ohio.”

Strong-Charles has earned respect on a national level for authentic storytelling through her work as an award-winning journalist. She was formerly an anchor for NBC News, and ABC affiliate, WEWS (News 5 Cleveland), receiving public service awards and industry recognition for her coverage of health care, education, family-focused features and breaking news. Most recently, she served as a news manager for Spectrum Networks in Ohio, guiding story development and leading statewide community engagement.

A native of Canton, Ohio, Strong-Charles is actively involved in the Northeast Ohio community. She is a board member of The Haven Home, which provides temporary housing for women and children who are experiencing homelessness in Cuyahoga County. She is a volunteer for the College Now Greater Cleveland (CNGC) Mentoring Program and serves on the scholarship committee for the McKinney Family Fund of the Cleveland Foundation.

Strong-Charles holds a bachelor’s degree in telecommunications from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. She and her husband, Tony, are proud parents of a young adult son.
