Carl Allamby, M.D. (’19), and his family

NEOMED Alumnus Makes Waves in Medicine

Carl Allamby, M.D. (’19), took a decidedly untraditional route to becoming a physician.

Before turning his focus to medicine, Dr. Allamby worked as a car mechanic, running his own car repair and used car business for nearly two decades.

After graduating from Northeast Ohio Medical University’s College of Medicine at the age of 47, Dr. Allamby, a former student trustee, took time to reflect in a recent interview with Michael K. McIntyre of The Plain Dealer.

Dr. Allamby isn’t the only health care professional in his family. One of his daughters is studying to become a nurse, and his wife serves as a physical therapist. Now, as an emergency medicine resident at Cleveland Clinic Akron General, Dr. Allamby told McIntyre he has a plan to make medicine a family affair.

“I have this big business plan where my son [a firefighter] will bring in the patient, I will save their life, and my wife will rehab them, and my daughter will take care of them while they’re in the hospital. And then they’ll get a free oil change on discharge.”
