Is That Earache a Sign of COVID-19?

When is an earache just an earache, and when might it be a symptom of COVID-19?

Prevention asked experts including Richard Watkins, M.D., an infectious disease physician and professor of internal medicine at Northeast Ohio Medical University.

First, a review of the most common symptoms of COVID-19, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):

  • Fever or chills
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle or body aches
  • Headache
  • New loss of taste or smell
  • Sore throat
  • Congestion or runny nose
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Diarrhea

While an earache is a possible symptom, “I have not seen this with any of my patients,” Dr. Watkins told Prevention.
