In the News: Alumnus shares perspective on clinician involvement in organizational budgeting to improve outcomes
Ramon S. Cancino, M.D., M.B.A., FAAFP, recently coauthored an article on the importance of clinician involvement in the budget planning process for health care organizations.
A 2009 graduate of the College of Medicine, Dr. Cancino, executive director of the Primary Care Center at UT Health San Antonio, published the article in HealthTech magazine with colleagues Matthew Stedman, MSHA, and Steve Brown, MBA and CHFP, also from UT Health San Antonio.
“It’s important to include clinicians in discussions about organizational goals, financial management and performance reviews to optimize strategies,” the authors noted.
Among the potential benefits, the authors listed enhanced patient outcomes, lower expenses and maximized resources.
“Understanding an individual’s impact on major practice objectives is vital for clinicians to provide necessary support in achieving these goals,” they wrote. “Such an environment can inspire the entire system to strive for both improved patient outcomes and better financial returns.”
