Girls Go Med

Encouraging girls with an interest in medicine is important to the students in Northeast Ohio Medical University’s chapter of the American Medical Women’s Association (AMWA). To help develop this interest, AMWA members are hosting the annual Girls Go Med Day, a day for high school girls to learn about health professions. The event will be held April 21 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Olson Hall and the Wasson Center, both at NEOMED. Priya Singh, a first-year student in the College of Medicine, decided to help run the event because, as she says, “Exposure and encouragement are key to instilling the drive to pursue a career in medicine.’’

This year, high-school students have the chance to hear female physician speakers, to interact with current medical students and to be involved in hands-on experiences, such as mock patient interviews, blood pressure checks and basic suturing (sewing stitches). Each participant will receive a t-shirt, lunch and certificate of completion.
