Funding Strategic Initiatives: Journal of Medical Sciences at NEOMED

The Journal of Medical Sciences at NEOMED (JMS) was founded in 2020 by Trinity Samson, M.D./Ph.D. student, and Fayez Safadi, Ph.D., professor of anatomy and neurobiology, with the goal of providing a platform for students, faculty and affiliates of NEOMED to publish original research, opinion pieces, editorials, reviews, and other works. An annual publication, with the first issue coming soon, will highlight notable research and provide leadership opportunities for students comprising the editorial board.

To assist with the success of the JMS, Samson and Safadi put together a proposal for strategic initiative funding. Aligning with four pillars in the strategic plan (People, Education, Discovery, and Growth), the JMS proposal highlighted the opportunities provided to authors to publish their work and receive guidance through the process from beginning to end through peer and faculty review for each submission prior to publication. As a student-run organization, JMS provides opportunities for students to become immersed in the review process taking on roles such as editors, peer reviewers, production team members and manuscript writing workshop coordinators. In addition to this, JMS leadership will run a monthly manuscript writing educational series open to students, faculty, and affiliates, to provide the support needed to be successful to those seeking to publish. After careful review by the strategic plan lead team, the JMS proposal was approved, and the total funds requested were awarded.

With the first issue close to completion, the Journal of Medical Sciences at NEOMED team is looking forward to continuing its work growing opportunities for authors and preparing for future publications.
