Does Silver Improve the Effectiveness of Face Masks?

Silver is the latest metal being added to protective face masks in the COVID-19 pandemic. When Yahoo Entertainment asked experts to comment, Richard Watkins, M.D., an infectious disease physician in Akron, Ohio, and a professor of internal medicine at Northeast Ohio Medical University, said, “Silver has known antibacterial activity,” noting that “silver coating is used on some medical devices to reduce the risk of infections.”

Yahoo Entertainment also looked into World Health Organization guidelines for face masks.
