Fourth-year Northeast Ohio Medical University College of Pharmacy student Sara Bonenfant was elected as chair of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists Pharmacy Student Forum Executive Committee at ASHP’s Summer Meetings and Exhibition in Boston.
The ASHP Pharmacy Student Forum is a community that helps prepare student members for future careers in hospital and health-system pharmacy. Its executive committee is made up of five student members who are appointed by the ASHP president.
“Through my role as the Pharmacy Student Forum chair, I have the privilege to sit on ASHP’s House of Delegates. A lot of people don’t know that the House of Delegates exists. They propose policies, then all of the delegates vote or amend these policies. Once these policies are in place, we can go to our legislators at the Capitol and say ASHP, a nationally recognized pharmacy association, supports this policy,” says Bonenfant.
The NEOMED student (pictured second from right) most recently served as the committee’s vice chair during the 2018-2019 academic year. Bonenfant has also served as NEOMED’s Student Society of Health-System Pharmacists president.
“ASHP cares about the growth of the pharmacists’ role within the hospital and through patient care. Every day, they are actively trying to change laws for the better of health care. They know that the patient is at the center and they want to make pharmacists as involved as they can with each patient’s care and see the value of having a pharmacist on the health care team, along with the doctors and nurses. It’s really cool to be a part of that,” says Bonenfant.
