Cleveland.com covers NEOMED’s effort to address Ohio’s mental health shortage
Feb. 20, 2026
Cleveland.com/The Plain Dealer today is reporting on NEOMED’s new certified mental health assistant pathway, made possible through the University’s Master of Science in Mental Health Practice program.
Students will be trained to work under physician supervision as part of team-based healthcare settings, helping care for patients with mental illness and substance use disorders.
Applications are being accepted for the program, which begins this summer on the Rootstown campus.
The need is urgent. In Ohio, 75 of 88 counties face shortages of mental health professionals, according to the Ohio Department of Health.
“This groundbreaking program will make it possible for more people in Ohio to connect with a mental healthcare provider and receive treatment in a timely manner,” said NEOMED President Dr. John Langell in the story. University leaders say the goal is simple: expand access and strengthen care for communities across the state.
