Area Students Invited to Register for NEOMED Brain Bee

Annual competition to test knowledge of neuroscience

Students, ages 14 through 18, have the opportunity to participate in Northeast Ohio Medical University’s sixth annual Brain Bee, a free competition that will test their knowledge of neuroscience.

The NEOMED Brain Bee will take place Saturday, Jan. 18, 2020, at the University. The winner moves on to the National Brain Bee Competition in March 2020. They will be provided with airfare, lodging and meal per diems for three people ― including the winner, one adult chaperone and one additional guest. In each of the past three years, the winner of NEOMED’s Brain Bee finished in the top five at the national competition.

The International Brain Bee was founded in 1999 and is the worldwide neuroscience competition for high school students. The competition motivates students to learn about the brain and inspires them to pursue neuroscience careers to help treat and find cures for neurological and psychological disorders. Brain Bees test students’ knowledge of neuroscience topics such as intelligence, emotions, memory, sleep, vision, hearing and sensations. Students are also quizzed on neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s; other illnesses, ― stroke, schizophrenia, epilepsy and depression; as well as addictions and brain research.

Free monthly tutoring sessions are available on Saturdays to help students prepare for the Brain Bee. Sessions will occur Sept. 14, Oct. 12, Nov. 9, Dec. 14 and Jan. 11 at NEOMED.

“Participating in a regional Brain Bee is a great way for high school students to foster academic relationships with neuroscientists and meet students with similar interests from other local high schools,” said Dana Peterson, Ph.D., M.Ed., assistant professor of anatomy and neurobiology. “We are excited to offer monthly preparatory Brain Bees. We see these sessions as a way to extend and reinforce these important mentoring relationships between NEOMED faculty and staff and area high school students.”
