Addiction Programs in Summit County Funded by Opioid Settlement

July 15, 2021

More than 5,000 Ohioans, including 219 in Summit County, Ohio, died of a drug overdose in 2020, according to an Akron Beacon Journal article posted July 4.

Summit County Council recently approved a variety of grants to be spent on addiction and recovery services, with the funds coming from the $104 million settlement in a federal opioid trial.

Among the grantees, the Northeast Ohio Medical University Foundation received $115,000 “to expand the university’s medication-assisted treatment (MAT) training program to students and area physicians,” according to the Akron Beacon Journal. The article noted, “NEOMED surveyed physicians to determine the barriers to offering the treatment and developed a four-hour supplemental training program to address them.”
