AAMC Recognizes NEOMED’s Ignite

The Association of American Medical Colleges has named Ignite magazine as an honoree in its annual Group on Institutional Advancement (GIA) Awards for Excellence program. Ignite magazine, which is published twice a year, received an honorable mention in the Print and Digital Publishing category of the 2018 competition. An awards presentation and reception will be held March 22 in Seattle, Washington, during the 2018 National Professional Development Conference for Institutional Advancement.

Two issues of the human interest magazine were submitted for consideration: Fall 2016 and Spring 2017. Judges praised the original artwork, commissioned from artists affiliated with partner institutions. Among the artists was Dave Szalay, an associate professor in the graphic design program at the University of Akron Myers School of Art, who created the cover for the Fall 2016 issue—which also won a statewide Society of Professional Journalists award in 2017. Branden Vondrak, a graduate of the Kent State University School of Visual Communication Design, created the cover for the Spring 2017 issue.

A sample of comments from the AAMC judges: “I love the novel approach: seeking “curious readers” rather than just creating another generic alumni mag. Execution is exceptional. Artwork, illustrations and photography are gorgeous, and content matches…Paper choice and oversize design are excellent. Content and writing are very good. Way to go!’’

Since June 2017, Ignite has also been honored

Ignite is produced by the Office of Marketing and Communications in NEOMED’s Division of Advancement. Its editor is Elaine Guregian; publication design is by Scott J. Rutan.
