A Look at SARS-CoV-2 and Lake Superior

Following a multi-month study, researchers at the University of Minnesota discovered small amounts of SARS-CoV-2 — the virus that causes COVID-19 — in water from Lake Superior.

Health experts like Richard Watkins, M.D., an infectious disease physician and professor of internal medicine at Northeast Ohio Medical University, offer some perspective. Dr. Watkins told Yahoo Sports that while SARS-CoV-2 can show up in wastewater, that doesn’t necessarily mean COVID-19 is transmitted through water.

Dr. Watkins added, “However, there is a lot we don’t know about the virus, so nothing can be definitively ruled out at this point.”
