Leader Named at GI Quality Improvement Consortium

March 4, 2021

Costas H. Kefalas, M.D. (’97), a professor of internal medicine, has been named president and chair of the board of directors of the GI Quality Improvement Consortium, Inc. (GIQuIC), which is the largest gastroenterology quality data registry in the U.S.

According to Dr. Kefalas, currently one-third of all U.S. gastroenterologists participate in this registry. He explains, “GIQuIC allows for the measurement and comparison of one’s quality data [for example, colonoscopy data] within one’s practice and nationally, against defined quality measures.”

Dr. Kefalas previously served as vice president of GIQuIC, which is an educational and scientific 501(c)(3) organization. GIQuIC was formed in 2009 by two of the four national GI societies: the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) and the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE).

Since 2003, Dr. Kefalas has practiced at Akron (Ohio) Digestive Disease Consultants. He also serves on the medical staff of Summa Health in Akron.
