Pathology professor is president-elect of national association

May 22, 2024

Congratulations to Jennifer Baccon, M.D., Ph.D., professor of pathology, who has been named president-elect of the newly renamed Association for Academic Pathology (formerly the Association of Pathology Chairs).

Dr. Baccon also is chair of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Akron Children’s Hospital. She has been an active member with AAP since 2017, having served as secretary-treasurer, chair of the membership committee and co-chair of the mentorship program, among other leadership activities.

According to the organization’s website, AAP is a nonprofit society that provides education, training, information resources and networking opportunities for pathology chairs, residency program directors, medical student educators, department administrators and program coordinators across the U.S. and Canada.

When asked her thoughts on becoming AAP president-elect, Dr. Baccon shared:

“I am honored to be recognized by peers at academic medical institutions across the country as a collaborative and visionary leader. I enjoy the work of assembling thought leaders from across the country to create strategy and produce work products that promote and sustain our field of pathology and laboratory medicine in health care today. As we head into the future with evolving regulations in the laboratory industry and the ever-increasing focus on genomics in the care of patients, this is an exciting time to be at the helm of the premier organization for pathologists in academia. I am looking forward to being the voice of academic pathology at the national level, and I thank my mentors, colleagues and students for always supporting and challenging me.

“I have been exceedingly fortunate to have had opportunities to lead within the Association for Academic Pathology early in my tenure as a chair, which gave me the experience necessary to take on the presidency of this amazing organization!”
