NEOMED Professor Appears on New Zealand TV Show

As New Zealand prepares for an upcoming referendum on the legalization of marijuana, Erik Messamore, M.D., Ph.D., an associate professor of psychiatry at Northeast Ohio Medical University who specializes in the treatment of schizophrenia, was recently called on by Breakfast, a New Zealand morning news and talk show.

In an interview with Breakfast co-host Hayley Holt, Dr. Messamore, who also serves as director of the Best Practices in Schizophrenia (BeST) Center at NEOMED, said, “I think we should have [cannabis] available but people should know about its risks,” detailing a longitudinal study showing a higher incidence of schizophrenia diagnoses among people who used cannabis before age 18.”
