College of Medicine welcomes Class of 2027 at White Coat Ceremony

Friday, July 21, 2023, started out gloomy. But just as the College of Medicine White Coat Ceremony was about to start, the clouds parted to reveal a beautiful summer afternoon with sunshine and a blue sky.

It sure seemed to be a good omen for the Class of 2027 as they begin their journey at NEOMED. The 181 members of the incoming College of Medicine class gathered in the NEW Center Ballroom, where they received their white coats in front of their cheerful family and friends.

The White Coat Ceremony is an annual tradition in which incoming students have their fresh, new white coats placed on them by second-year students as a rite of passage as future health professionals, and all of the responsibilities that come with it.

“Patients entrust to us their bodies, their lives, their secrets,” said Marc Basson, M.D., Ph.D., M.B.A., dean of the College of Medicine. “And we, in turn, must honor that trust with an unwavering moral commitment, a determination to offer them the best care possible, both physically and emotionally.”

“You will master new bodies of knowledge, new ways of thinking and speaking, and new techniques,” Dr. Basson continued, as he presided over his first White Coat Ceremony as dean of the college. “Today, you begin, and I am excited to begin with you.”

Once each student had their turn in the spotlight to receive their coat on the ballroom stage, the ceremony was followed by a reception filled with smiles and hugs as family and friends rushed to congratulate students in their sparkling new white coats.
