Master of Science in Mental Health Practice Let's talk careers
Graduates of the Master of Science in Mental Health Practice (MS MHP) program are prepared for roles as Certified Mental Health Assistants (CMHA) in these care settings:
- inpatient psychiatric units
- outpatient mental health clinics
- primary care clinics
- community mental health organizations
As a Certified Mental Health Assistant, you will work alongside physicians and other healthcare professionals, making a positive difference in the lives of individuals facing mental health challenges.
Opportunity in Ohio
CMHAs will be licensed to work exclusively in Ohio at this time.
Ohio has about half the psychiatrists needed to meet patient demand. By 2037, due to retirements and rising demand, that number is expected to drop to just one-third. By integrating Certified Mental Health Assistants into care teams, Ohioans will have expanded access to mental health services.

What oversight body issues the CMHA license?
The Ohio State Medical Board will license CMHAs.
When will licensure be available?
NEOMED has assurances from the state board that licensure will be in place by January 2028. This means that any student starting the MS MHP program will not complete the program before licensure is available.
Is there a licensure or board exam required?
No exam is required at this time, and there are no plans under consideration to require an examination for CMHA’s.
What are the billing rates and codes for CMHA services?
Billing codes, including Medicaid eligible codes, are presently under development. CMHA’s may also have the opportunity to bill for services through supervising psychiatrists.
