Healthier Meals for Hispanic Families

Hispanic children and their parents recently got a taste of healthier ways to fix their favorite foods, thanks to a program by the Akron, Ohio-based Proyecto RAICES organization.

Cooking instructors got an assist from second-year Northeast Ohio Medical University students Aviva Aguilar and Ashley Houston. The two second-year students in the College of Medicine’s Urban Primary Care Pathway program opened the session with tips on how to read a nutrition label and an explanation of the difference between good and bad fats.

Covering the session for the Akron Beacon Journal, Betty Lin-Fisher wrote, as Aguilar spoke to the group in Spanish, she showed a slide explaining that it would take riding a bike for one hour and 42 minutes to burn off the 250 calories in a Happy Meal hamburger.”
