NEOMED Professor Discusses Increase in Fungal Infection

With recent appearances in New York, New Jersey and Illinois, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has declared a fungal infection called Candida auris an emerging threat in the U.S.
Richard Watkins, M.D., an associate professor of internal medicine at Northeast Ohio Medical University, says this infection is especially concerning because of its resistance to several drugs used to treat Candida infections. Candida auris (aka C. auris) sounds like the name many people use to refer to a yeast infection, but this strain can lead to sepsis – even death.
Dr. Watkins tells Prevention, “This has led to a higher mortality compared to other fungal infections.”
