Northeast Ohio Medical University Appoints Mulhern as Chief of Staff

Michelle MulhernNortheast Ohio Medical University announced the appointment of Michelle M. Mulhern, M.P.A., to the position of chief of staff and secretary, Board of Trustees, effective Jan. 1, 2019.

Mulhern had been acting as interim chief of staff to fill a void that occurred with the departure of Carolyn Lanier, who left NEOMED to return to the metro DC area to pursue other opportunities.  Prior to assuming the interim position, Mulhern served as executive director, administration and associate board secretary at NEOMED.

Mulhern, who has more than 20 years of higher education experience, began her career at Kent State University working within the division of business and finance.  In 2006, she joined NEOMED in the office of the president and dean, College of Medicine, working directly with Dr. Lois Margaret Nora.  In addition to her previously mentioned roles, Mulhern has served as executive assistant to the president.

Assuming positions of increasing responsibility in these roles and serving as a member of the University’s leadership team, Mulhern provided leadership, direction and hands-on, day-to-day operational management of the President’s Office. She actively participated in strategic planning, goal-setting and evaluation; operations and project management; and financial and talent management. She also developed efficiency workflow and process improvements.

Currently, Mulhern represents the University on several external organizations including the board of directors of Embracing Futures and P.A.L.S. for Healing. She also serves on the advisory board for NEOMED’s Student-Run Free Clinic. Nationally, she serves as a board member and treasurer of the National Association of Presidential Assistants in Higher Education as well as the co-chair of the national conference planning committee. Previously, she served as a board member for the American Cancer Society’s Volunteer Leadership Council, Leadership Portage County and Kent Area Chamber of Commerce.

“As chief of staff, Ms. Mulhern will be able to draw from her experiences and strategic vision to support the University’s mission and many priorities including implementation of the strategic plan and assisting the Board of Trustees during their search for NEOMED’s next president,” said Jay A. Gershen, D.D.S., Ph.D., president of NEOMED.

Mulhern earned a B.A. in organizational management at Malone University and a Master of Public Administration from Kent State University where she is currently pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy in public health with a focus on health policy and management.
