Northeast Ohio Medical University recognized among nation’s leaders in translational research by New Cure Innovation Index

April 30, 2026

A new national benchmark for biomedical innovation has recognized Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED) as one of the nation’s leading institutions in translating scientific discovery into real-world health impact.

On April 29, Cure, a New York–based nonprofit dedicated to accelerating advances in health, launched the Cure Innovation Index, a first-of-its-kind ranking that evaluates how effectively institutions move research from the laboratory into clinical and commercial application.

Unlike traditional rankings that emphasize research volume alone, the Index focuses on translational performance—highlighting the growing distinction between scientific output and real-world impact. The results suggest that institutions driving the future of healthcare are not always those with the largest research budgets, but those most effective at turning discovery into solutions.

The Index evaluated more than 1,200 eligible institutions from a broader pool exceeding 6,000 organizations engaged in higher education and biomedical research. From this group, 303 institutions were selected and ranked across three key areas: the ability to support innovation and commercialization, the strength of research infrastructure and output, and success in converting discoveries into clinical and market-ready applications.

Ohio emerged as a top-performing state, ranking #5 nationally for the number of institutions included in the new index and #2 for institutions exceeding expectations relative to size and resources.

NEOMED was named among the top 303 institutions—placing it in the top 5% of institutions nationally—and earned additional distinction as one of the top 20 institutions outperforming expectations, ranking #12 in the nation for impact relative to size and resources.

“At NEOMED, we are not simply advancing science—we are transforming it into action,” said John Langell, M.D., Ph.D., President of Northeast Ohio Medical University. “Being recognized as a national leader in translational innovation reflects our mission to develop transformational leaders who don’t just imagine the future of healthcare—they build it.”

This recognition highlights NEOMED’s expanding role as a statewide driver of health innovation—advancing research, education, and care delivery through strategic partnerships across Ohio. These efforts are accelerating the movement of discovery into practice, improving patient outcomes, strengthening communities, and helping shape the future of healthcare.
