In this lecture, Dr. Dugan examines some of the potential therapeutic uses for amantadine, explains its mechanisms of action, and reviews potential risks. By the end of this lecture, you will be able to: 1) describe the mechanism of action of amantadine, 2) list the adverse effects associated with the use of amantadine, and 3) identify uses for amantadine in patients with mental health conditions.

MAO Inhibitors. How Do These Antidepressants Work and How to Use Them Safely

In this lecture, Dr. Dugan explains how the MAO inhibitors work and the mechanisms behind the potential risks. She also discusses the therapeutic benefits of these medications and how to use them safely. By the end of this lecture, you will be able to: 1) describe the mechanism of action of the monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), 2) identify relevant interactions of MAOIs with medications and foods, and 3) evaluate efficacy data of MAOIs in treatment of depression.

 

What are the risks of Lithium and How to use it safely?

In this lecture, Dr. Dugan takes a look at the risk profile of lithium and discusses ways to use it safely. By the end of this lecture, you will be able to: 1) list the indications for use of lithium, 2) identify short- and long-term adverse effects associated with lithium use, and 3) compare monitoring recommendations for patients on lithium.

Tricyclic Antidepressants: An Overview

In this lecture, Dr. Dugan discusses the tricyclic antidepressants including their mechanism of action, indications, dosing, monitoring, and common side effects. By the end of this lecture, you will be able to: 1) describe the pharmacology of the tricyclic antidepressants (TCA), 2) identify relevant pharmacokinetic differences between TCAs, and 3) evaluate the literature on TCAs for the treatment of depression.

 

Antipsychotics

In this lecture, Dr. Dugan addresses the proper dosing of antipsychotic medication. By the end of this lecture, you will be able to: 1) identify biological, social, and psychological factors that affect psychotic illness, 2) define the mechanisms or rationale for treatments appropriate for psychotic illness, and 3) integrate biological, social, and psychological considerations when designing and implementing treatment of individuals affected by psychotic illness.
