NEOMED Students Participate in National Discussion

Over Martin Luther King weekend, eight Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED) students had the opportunity to meet physicians, residents, fellows and other medical students from across the country. The students attended the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origins’ annual Winter Medical Conference in Las Vegas.

The AAPI is the second largest medical association and overall the largest ethnic medical association in the United State. The AAIP’s Young Physicians Section (YPS) and Medical Student, Resident, and Fellow section (MSRF) hosted the conference. Both sections are dedicated to helping young physicians in their early years of practice or education/training. The AAPI Winter Medical Conference made it possible for the next generation of AAPI leaders to network, share new ideas, and help shape the national discussion on the future of medicine.

NEOMED’s AAPI chapter members Shreya Reddy (M2), Neha Chavali (M2), Devika Gandhi (M2), Shilpi Shah (M3), Pranay Magal (M3), Rahul Damania (M4), Amar Shah (M4), and Amit Parikh (M4) participated in a variety of physician-led workshops and medical discussions. They also shared their own basic and clinical scientific research during a poster session.

Shreya Reddy presented research that she completed over the summer at the University of Occupational and Environmental Health in Fukuoka, Japan. Her research was focused on the anti-cancer effects of drugs used to treat leukemia and lymphoma.

“We have a strong Indian-American population here at NEOMED, but it was incredible to connect with other professionals of the same origin on a national level,” said Reddy. She added that it was interesting to hear about everyone’s experiences as Indian-Americans in healthcare.

NEOMED’s APPI members shared their hard work and dedication with members of the medical field, earning recognition for NEOMED as well. The students learned valuable lessons at the conference, such as how to develop professional connections. Reddy said that she learned that to be a contributing member in healthcare, you have to be a leader and to interact with people from many diverse backgrounds.
