NEOMED responds to SCOTUS rulings and anticipated Ohio legislative changes

Dear NEOMED Community:

Forrest Faison III, M.DYesterday, the Supreme Court ruled that race-conscious admissions programs at Harvard and the University of North Carolina are unconstitutional.

NEOMED is currently reviewing the full text of the Supreme Court decision to determine what impact the decision will have on NEOMED. We are also awaiting legislation in Ohio to determine any impact the state’s changes may have on diversity programs.

NEOMED includes diversity among its strategic priorities to train and educate health professionals who reflect the communities they will one day serve. Recognizing the patterns of disparate outcomes that occur from standardized testing, NEOMED subscribes to best practices in the use of holistic admission approaches that provide opportunities for an array of students to thrive in advanced health professions degree programs.

As a result, we are ranked in the top third for medical school diversity in the country (#41 according to U.S. News & World Report) and our first-year class average G.P.A. for biology, chemistry, physics, and math classes have remained steady while average MCAT scores continue to rise.

As a public university, NEOMED operates within the parameters of the legal and regulatory environment to serve Ohio and beyond. We anticipate that any changes to admissions will not impact current students.
