Ischemic Heart Disease & Failure
A research cluster within the Heart and Blood Vessel Disease Research Focus Area, the Ischemic Heart Disease and Heart Failure cluster is comprised of eight researchers.
The Chen group is studying ways to minimize the consequences of a heart attack by maintaining the hearts ability to produce energy. Because more people survive heart attacks, heart failure is becoming a problem as after a heart attack, the heart has an increased likelihood to fail. The Thodeti laboratory is studying ways to minimize the processes that lead to failure after heart attack. Heart failure is a fatal condition and patients suffering from this affliction have a lower life expectancy than if diagnosed with colon cancer. The Chilian and Ohanyan laboratories are studying ways to stop the heart from failing and even reverse the consequences of failure. Ultimately, what causes the heart attack is a problem starting in blood vessels. One aspect in the development of blood vessel injury is that the blood vessels take up fat from the blood and blockages in the blood vessels are the areas with fat accumulation. Dr. Raman’s group is studying ways to prevent the fat accumulation in a blood vessel that will prevent the development of the blockages.
