We spoke with Kathryn Leciejewski, PharmD, BCACP, CDE, who is a preceptor at EnvisionRX Options.

Why did you choose pharmacy?

I always wanted to be a health care provider, but my decision was solidified when my brother was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes when he was 11 years old. His disease management was dependent on his health care team. From the dispensing pharmacist, doctors and diabetes educators, I saw a very interdisciplinary approach to disease state management and I realized that I wanted to be a part of interdisciplinary health care team. It was not until my final year of pharmacy school on rotations when I realized that I could function as an ambulatory care pharmacist in clinic and manage diabetes. My career path has exposed me to different pharmacy roles and I am so thankful for all of those experiences to have lead me to my role as a drug information pharmacist in the managed care setting today.

what advice and tips do you have for new students or young professionals about starting careers?

  • Be flexible and willing to learn.
  • Be teachable with a good attitude that welcome constructive feedback.
  • There are also different avenues to pharmacy practice outside of retail and hospital, explore those different opportunities in rotations, you may not realize how much you actually enjoy a particular area until you get some time to work in it!

What positive attributes do students provide your site?

  • Students have the opportunities to work on client facing projects, while getting exposure to a non-traditional pharmacy career path
  • Students will have the opportunity to work with our national P&T committee presenting newly approved drugs to both physicians and pharmacists throughout the country.
  • Exposure to the drug pipeline and potential to have work published on our national blog, Perspectives on the Pipeline
