Registration Open for NEOMED Brain Bee and Tutoring Sessions

Do you know a high school student interested in learning more about neuroscience? The Northeast Ohio Medical University Brain Bee is not only a fun way for them to challenge themselves, but also meet new people and further their education through the free tutoring sessions leading up to the event on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2019.

“Participating in a regional Brain Bee is a great way for high school students to foster academic relationships with neuroscientists and meet students with similar interests from other local high schools,” Dana Peterson, Ph.D., M.Ed., assistant professor of anatomy and neurobiology, said. “We are excited to offer monthly preparatory tutoring. We see these sessions as a way to extend and reinforce these important mentoring relationships between NEOMED faculty and staff and area high school students.”

The winner of the competition will be provided airfare, lodging and a meal per diem for the trip to the National Brain Bee Competition in Baltimore for themselves and their support team (chaperone and guest) in March 2019.

Free monthly tutoring sessions on Saturdays are available to help students prepare for the Brain Bee. Sessions will occur Sept. 8, Oct. 13, Nov. 10 and Dec. 8 at NEOMED.

The International Brain Bee was founded in 1999 and is the worldwide neuroscience competition for high school students. The competition motivates students to learn about the brain and inspires them to pursue neuroscience careers to help treat and find cures for neurological and psychological disorders. Brain Bees test students’ knowledge of the human brain regarding such topics as intelligence, emotions, memory, sleep, vision, hearing and sensations. Students are quizzed on illnesses such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and stroke; schizophrenia; epilepsy and depression. Addictions and brain research are also covered.
