Our research with the youngest population has potential applications for older adults, who often develop swallowing problems along with neurological diseases such as Parkinson\u2019s. Our research uses an array of electrophysiology and biomechanical modalities including XROMM (high speed video-fluroscopy), electromyography (EMG), and plethysmography. We are interested in both the fundamental physiology and neural control of feeding, as well as pathophysiologies of compromised infants and the development of translational rehabilitation strategies. Our lab group is based on collaboration, both with clinical professionals and trainees interested in developing their research skills.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h4>Current work<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Project 1: Normal and Pathophysiology of Sensorimotor Interactions During Swallowing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We are working to determine the impact of sensory lesions on infant sucking and swallowing. We are examining the performance and biomechanical impacts of oropharyngeal sensory deficits on swallowing function. Rather than relying on retrospective or post-hoc clinical data, with significant variation and co-morbidities, we are able to isolate the specific sequelae to the sensory deficit.
