Institutional Names

University name

Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED)

When spelling out the full name of the campus — Northeast Ohio Medical University — do not precede the name with the word “The”:

Students at Northeast Ohio Medical University begin classes this fall.

In editorial copy ― publication, published story, Op-Ed or press release ― Northeast Ohio Medical University should always receive at least one prominent mention and the full name must be used on first mention.

In subsequent mentions, you may shorten to NEOMED or the University (capitalized):

They attend Northeast Ohio Medical University. Students at NEOMED will attend the event. Faculty and staff from the University will attend as well.

A collective noun, it is singular in construction:

She is a student at the University. It is located in Rootstown, Ohio.

Exceptions:

“NEOMED” can be used as a first and only mention in headlines, email subject lines, social media messages and other space-sensitive areas; but in editorial copy, it should be used only after the full university name has been used at least once.

“NEOMED” can also be used in marketing collateral copy due to limited space and creative license. However, such collateral must always include the main University logo (See Brand Guidelines “placement”) which is anchored at the bottom and serves as the most prominent mention.

When making reference to our campus or University, describe it as a medical university; do not refer to the University as a medical college or medical school.

For university students, use “medical” when referencing an all-inclusive group of students in different health care professions:

We celebrated the achievements of our medical students at commencement.

Do not use “medical” as a reference to only one group when mentioning two or more University student populations in the same sentence:

Incorrect: We celebrated the achievements of our medical, pharmacy and graduate
students at commencement.

Correct: We celebrated the achievements of our medicine, pharmacy and graduate
students at commencement.

For College-specific students, use “medicine” only when referring to programs in the College of Medicine:

We welcomed new medicine students during the College of Medicine White Coat Ceremony.

Use “pharmacy” only when referring to programs in the College of Pharmacy:

Thirty-two pharmacy students participated in residency match today.

Use “graduate” only when referring to programs in the College of Graduate Studies:

Commencement included graduate students from four different degree programs.

Colleges

In editorial and collateral materials, limit the use of acronyms (COM, COP, COGS) wherever possible, as these acronyms are not considered fi rst or second mentions and are unknown to those outside of campus.

On first mention, use the full name of the university and the college:

Northeast Ohio Medical University College of Medicine;

Northeast Ohio Medical University College of Pharmacy;
